Composite Fillings

What Are Composite Fillings?

Dental composite fillings are a form of filler material that is tooth-colored and used to restore teeth that have been damaged or deteriorated as a result of tooth decay, resulting in cavities. Unlike previous conventional fillings, composite fillings are not comprised of metal, but rather, are constructed of a combination of small particles of glass or ceramic and a substance that is similar to tooth enamel, like resin. This makes it possible for them to be sculpted and formed to match the natural color and shapes of the tooth, which ultimately leads to a more visually acceptable result.

Advantages of Composite Fillings

With composite fillings, the tooth structure receives increased support and strength due to their direct connection to the affected tooth. This assists in preventing the tooth from decaying more or being damaged further. Composite fillings, in comparison to metal fillings, are also often less obvious, which is one of the primary benefits associated with their use.

As they are designed to be the same shade as the teeth around them, they are able to blend in perfectly and are almost imperceptible. This allows patients to keep the natural look of their smile. Other advantages, aside from aesthetic ones, include functionality.

Composite fillings do not expand and contract with variations in temperature as metal fillings do, which helps in avoiding tooth fractures and sensitivity. Composite fillings are also less likely to cause allergic reactions. When it comes to repairing damaged teeth and bringing back a smile's natural look, composite fillings are a method that is both relatively risk-free and very efficient. Overall, they have the potential to survive for many years if properly cared for and maintained.

Composite Fillings Procedure

First, you will have your dental health evaluated by Dr. Shadi AlShaikh and his team, who will then decide whether or not a composite filling is the most effective treatment option for your affected tooth/teeth. Next, the tooth will be prepared by removing any decay or damaged tissue that may be present.

Following this preparation, Dr. Shadi AlShaikh will apply a bonding agent to the surface of the tooth. This helps to develop a strong link between the filling material and the tooth, which is necessary for proper functioning. The composite filling material will then be mixed and applied to the tooth. Layer upon layer of the material is applied and sculpted to conform to the tooth's natural features.

After that, the composite resin will be cured under specialized UV light to harden the material and ensure it remains sturdy and long-lasting. Finally, Dr. Shadi AlShaikh will examine your bite and make any modifications to the filling to ensure that the final product is comfortable and natural, followed by aftercare instructions to maintain future proper dental health.
