Extractions

What Are Extractions?

Many adolescents and adults have their wisdom teeth removed for greater oral health and comfort of surrounding teeth. However, there are additional situations in which teeth extraction may be required.

Dental extractions may be necessary due to severe tooth decay, infections, or crowding. One or two teeth may need to be extracted in order to make way for the other teeth as they move into position for those who obtain braces. Additionally, damaged teeth may need to be removed in order to maintain overall oral health.

Overall, tooth extraction is a short outpatient surgery where a dentist removes an affected tooth or teeth.

Advantages of Extractions

Despite its stigma, tooth extractions are beneficial for both aesthetic and restorative reasons. Firstly, removing teeth can help ease overcrowding within the mouth or relieve pressure from impacted teeth. This enables the remaining teeth to adapt proportionately within the jaw and allow for a more beautiful smile.

Contrary to common opinion, tooth extractions are also performed to prevent pain. As a severely damaged or decaying tooth may cause a variety of problems for dental and general health, removal of it may solve such problems, especially if it is replaced with other cutting-edge dental treatments like an implant. If left untreated, an infection in one tooth can potentially to spread to the nearby teeth and gums.

To avoid this, a tooth extraction helps remove the damaged tooth while keeping the others intact. Overall, it is clear to see how, while unpleasant, the removal of a tooth can be a beneficial and sometimes a necessary procedure to ensure a perfect and healthy smile.

Extraction Procedure

Dr. Shadi AlShaikh will examine the affected tooth to determine whether it is visible or impacted. This might require scans and X-rays of your mouth and jaw. Depending on its status, the doctor will then opt for either a simple or surgical extraction.

During a simple extraction, a local anesthetic is administered, to numb the region surrounding your tooth so that the process will be relatively pain free, with only pressure sensation. only cause you to feel pressure rather than pain. After that, Dr. Shadi AlShaikh will loosen the tooth using a dental tool called an elevator, and then extract it with forceps.

Opposingly, a surgical extraction, is a bit more invasive and requires both intravenous and local anesthetic. First Dr. Shadi AlShaikh will thoroughly review your dental and medical history to ensure that this type of extraction is suitable for you and to see that you can withstand the general anesthesia. If this course of treatment is chosen, the doctor will then cut a tiny incision into your gum around the tooth, exposing its root. Using similar tools as in the simple extraction method, the doctor will then extract the tooth. Some cases may require additional cuts and filing of the tooth and surrounding bone in order to pull the tooth out.

After the anesthesia has worn off, Dr. Shadi AlShaikh and his team will closely monitor you and provide you with comprehensive aftercare instructions to ensure a quick and healthy recovery.
